Unlocking the Power of Mindset: From Average to Elite Performer

Everything starts with a core idea that must be internalized: reality itself—what happens to you or me—is neutral. It's neither good nor bad; it simply is. Our job is to assign meaning to our experiences in a way that helps us move forward. This is a key distinction between average performers and elite performers.

Average performers, as I define them, are those who have never trained their mental performance. They often see failure as proof that they're not good enough. When frustration arises, they tend to give up. When they receive feedback, they take it personally and assign negative meaning to it. Essentially, they operate with a disempowering mindset. Carol Dweck, a psychologist from Stanford, defines this as a "fixed mindset," where people believe their abilities are limited and cannot be developed further through deliberate practice.

Elite performers, on the other hand, operate from a vastly different perspective. They have what can be called an "infinite comfort zone." They're comfortable with whatever life throws at them, and as a result, they take more risks, even if it leads to temporary failures. For them, failure is simply feedback—information that helps them course-correct and improve. When things get tough, they persevere, which is why they consistently achieve more than average performers. They filter reality through a lens of self-efficacy, a concept Albert Bandura introduced, which is the belief in one’s ability to figure things out and get things done. This mindset is a defining trait of elite performers.

The Power of Self-Talk in Shaping Performance

At Selfmastered, we help clients develop this elite mindset because the mind is the most important tool you will ever have. So how do you sharpen your mind? It starts with understanding the power of your mindset, and the number one way to gauge this is through self-talk.

As Jim Loehr, a performance psychologist and author of The Power of Full Engagement, said, "Self-talk is a real power broker in our lives." Even Tim Grover, Michael Jordan's performance coach, emphasized that the mental game and self-talk were what made Jordan exceptional. Self-talk reveals the quality of your mindset. If your self-talk is disempowering, that’s a sign of a fixed mindset. When you face a problem, do you catastrophize? Do setbacks knock you out of the game and make you feel defeated? If that little voice in your head constantly tells you that you’re not good enough or that you’ll never succeed, then you’re trapped in a disempowering mental loop.

Elite performers are the opposite. When faced with challenges, they create empowering self-talk that tells them they’re capable of handling anything. They view failure as proof that they’re pushing their limits, and they see problems as opportunities. Every setback is just another stepping stone toward winning at a game that most people won't even attempt. This is the real difference between average and elite performers.

3 Steps for Transforming Negative Self-Talk

Step 1: Understand How Self-Talk Works

First, you need to grasp how your self-talk reflects your subconscious beliefs. Your self-talk is a direct signal of what you believe about yourself and the task at hand. If you have a subconscious belief that you’re not fit for a situation, your self-talk will likely be negative. On the other hand, if you believe you’re capable, your self-talk tends to be empowering.

Negative self-talk arises from subconscious fears or limitations. Every time you catch yourself talking negatively, pause and ask: What triggered this thought? What specific situation made you start doubting yourself? This is where self-awareness begins, and it's a critical first step.

Step 2: Analyze and Rationalize

Once you've identified the trigger, the next step is to consciously analyze why that situation brought up negative self-talk. What fear or limiting belief is lurking in your subconscious that makes you feel incapable? Are you afraid of failure? Do you think you're not good enough? Rationalizing these fears helps you understand the root cause, making it easier to address them head-on.

Step 3: Rewrite Your Narrative

Now for the most powerful part: rewriting the script. Every time negative self-talk arises, flip the narrative. Literally, write down a new story that counters your old, limiting belief. Let me give you a personal example.

When I first started working internationally, I was insecure about my English. As a native Spanish speaker, I was worried that my communication skills would limit my success. Every time I stumbled during a conversation or an email campaign didn't land, I felt that I would never improve—that I was too old to learn English well enough to scale my business.

So, I did exactly what I’m telling you to do. I wrote down the specific triggers: maybe it was a failed email campaign, a blackout during a conversation, or a miscommunication with a team member. Then, I rewrote the story. I reminded myself of facts: I had successfully attracted 120 clients through my marketing efforts, and the business was thriving despite minor setbacks. I would write these positive truths down, then repeat them to myself.

Over time, this practice shifted my mindset. I started seeing the proof that I was capable, even if my English wasn’t perfect. I could still communicate, build products, create marketing campaigns, and even learn copywriting in English. The more I rewrote my internal script, the more confident I became—and that made all the difference.

Transform Your Mind Into Your Most Valuable Asset

In short, nurturing a growth mindset is key to long-term success. Your self-talk is the best way to gauge it—disempowering thoughts reflect a fixed mindset, while empowering ones show growth. The more positive your inner dialogue, the easier your business journey becomes.

Becoming your own best coach is far more valuable than learning another marketing or sales trick. It’s this inner mastery that drives real progress.
